I've had a few complaints about my Security Code (See This Post) that I have in my Guestbook (and Blog Comments, etc.). Some people have said that the graphics I use are too difficult to read. So I've come up with some new code to create a Security Key. It's currently active in my Guestbook Page and in my Blog Comments. So far it seems to be working just as good at keeping out SPAM as my old code, plus it can be configured for different looks using simple CSS.

How can I make my site appear at the top of the Google search results?

I get this question a lot. So instead of writing a new answer to the question every time I get asked, I've decided to write a tutorial, entitled "Search Engine Optimization - Improving Search Engine Rankings: A Quick SEO Primer, By George Jaros". It contains a bunch of techniques for improving your search engine rankings.

Undoubtedly there are a bunch of other methods for boosting your page rank that I don't cover. But the topics should give you enough to get your site ranked fairly well. I've relied on these simple techniques and have had great success with my page ranks. I've seen sites climb from 50th to 2nd in Google search results simply by applying the techniques here. Sites may not be #1, but they do very well and get the exposure they deserve. If you are still looking for more ways to improve your page rank, do a Google search. Saturday, July 15, 2006 - Guestbook and Abuse Update

Well, things were going great with my security code script for my guestbook. Over three days without a single false signature attempt getting through. However, the way i had the code written, none of the spam bots were getting banned either. So now I've adjusted my code so that the messages are checked for spam before the security code is checked. This means that spammers will still get banned and the few that don't will still have to enter the correct security key. Hopefully this means taht I won't ever have to delete messages from the spam bots that fool my spam word filters. And as time goes oon I'll probably loosen up my filters so that actual guestbook entries will be able to have URLs and stuff in them.

Friday, July 14, 2006 - It works!

I'm VERY happy to report that my new security code on my guestbook has been working great! In the two and a half days that I've had the code in place I haven't had a single bogus guestbook signing and haven't had to add a single IP address to my abusers list. I (temporarily) have every signing attempt that doesn't enter the correct key send me a short email, just so I can see how well it's working. I've had 45 signing attempts in 2.5 days, all of which were spam and none of which even attempted to enter in the key code. So I'm very happy with the script. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 - Better Guestbook Security

I've really been getting tired of people trying to post to my guestbook advertising everything under the sun, from casinos to medication and worse. I've implemented a whole bunch of preventative measures to try and stop robots, spiders, scripts, and just plain jerks from posting SPAM to my guestbook (see my Agents page). Now I've gone one step further and ceated my own security key code to try to prevent anyone from posting bogus messages. The characters will display randomly from 341 different images that I created and if the code entered on the Sign Guestbook page doesn't match the characters displayed the message won't get submitted. I hope it works. Give it a try and post a message to my Guestbook!
